the morning of July 21 I start traveling with friend Raf (Raffaele De Marinis ) a person who has great experience of high mountains and beyond. Our program is a 3 days on the Bernina and me an opportunity to learn about the environment of high mountains and subcutaneous (since the tour includes a section on the glacier with crampons and use of a section of railway with harness ), as well as to take pictures, of course.
We get on the road mid-morning, the traffic flows slow enough for almost all the way, we stop them shopping at a supermarket parking lot and once you reach the point of departure, eat some sandwiches on the fly and immediately begin to climb.
about 13:30 am when we walk and despite the altitude and the overcast sky, the heat is felt, particularly in light of our heavy backpacks.
The course is not overly strenuous climb steadily without tearing excessive, but the heat and weight make us sweat a lot.
After an hour and a half we are in the middle, a light rain forced us to wear a cape, but time to get to the shelter and Carate Brianza and has already stopped.
leave out to dry coats and enter for a biretta, then reload the backpacks and we resume the climb. The last stretch is quieter, the shelter is just an effort to go beyond the top and then there's a long stretch almost flat before the final ascent to reach the refuge Marinelli, where to stay. Before beginning the final ascent, however, we stopped near a small lake is still partially frozen for a few shots. The light is bad but the place has good ideas.
At the retreat we rest a bit 'on the benches outside, then enter and settle our affairs.
At about 19:30 we have dinner, then immediately take the camera equipment and go out to the sunset. Surprisingly, there are other people, including young boys, who seem passionate photography, all ready with the camera for the sunset, although we are reminded that only two we brought up the tripod. La luz / sky is not evil, that is against the backlight and the scenery is fascinating, I have not brought the filters (more weight), so I have to use double exposures.
After the light falls, set your alarm for safety and we lie in bed for a little 'rest, waiting for nightfall in order to photographing the stars. Do not fall asleep, but a little 'relaxation never hurts, especially my shoulders aching from the weight of the backpack, I wonder why always too full, my ... When darkness fell
seems to go out to see the situation. The sky is partly cloudy, but this is little compared to the almost full moon (which we had not calculated) that prevents its brightness almost all the good star.
However the atmosphere is special, then I feel, however, some photos, before we sleep.
Now, our program provided a wake-up well before dawn, about an hour's walk to get to a vantage point and catch the first light of day, then un'attraversata glacier and a section of railway to reach even higher and the hut Marco Rosa, where to stay before you get back on the way to return the machine. The previous evening, however, talking with managers Marinelli, we learn that the section we want to do in the morning, is still covered with snow, so, as well as provide a longer journey, it also presents more difficulties and dangers, especially in the dark with only the headlight, in addition the forecast for the third day does not bode well, and those shares that may have problems down the hill to the car.
We decide to wake up a little 'later in the morning and avoid the climb to another shelter, cutting a de facto part of the journey and a shortening of the days out.
Early in the morning we get up, have breakfast, we load our stuff and we start.
take a path that leads us on to Marinelli, along which are just the snow, but with a little 'attention to the steps going up without any problems. Then leave backpacks, taking only the camera, and we climb up a small peak, where there is a beautiful 360 ° view for some photos of the area.
Then we go down, we take the backpacks and head towards the glacier.
Instead of going where we went, we decided to go the other side, then doing a sort of round trip (to go and then a stretch of the glacier, which otherwise would not have done).
Shortly before we stop, put on crampons, ice axes prey in hand and begin to walk on ice. It 's a strange feeling, being on a surface so slippery and walk normally! I thought that the use of crampons would lead to a heavier hand to grip with the tips in the ice, instead Raf tells me that you just keep a normal pace, just a little 'wider legs to prevent spikes getting caught with their pants.
The scenery is really nice, with the glacier that has a number of holes and dunes of snow, and almost seems unreal to be in a place like this in T-shirt with short sleeves!
Unfortunately the camera is hidden in the depths of my backpack, while the RAF take to screw in a convenient purse, so you always have on hand, so I ask him to take a photo.

After the sudden we find ourselves in a very rocky from which it has a nice view of a very rugged piece of glacier.
We took off our crampons and some photos, a moment of rest where they take the opportunity to eat chocolate and then try the exact point where the path to go down, which is not really well marked. Now there is a point
abbstanza difficult (an overhang of about 3 meters with no grips), then come with the rope dropped, we spend backpacks and shoes and then falls even Raffaele.
The following piece is on rocks and is quite sdruciolevole, so be careful where you put your feet on the edge and leads to a small pond. From here it runs along the entire shore and climbed to the highest point of the left bank, where you have a beautiful view of the valley adjacent Raf informs me that to be the remnant of a glacier that no longer exists. From here the trail is easy and fast to get to the shelter Bignami, where we stop for lunch, a couple of quick sandwiches and leave again.
Once in the valley remains to be traveling along the side of the lake Campomoro to get to the car. We split
: Raffaele stay where we arrived with backpacks, while I go without weights to get the car and then returned to take in order to avoid unnecessary fatigue.
I sincerely regret not having had the opportunity to try a railroad, however I am pleased with the experience gained and of course, the scenarios that I have pout admire. I will surely have other chances to make tracks, and while on the way back we speak of a climb to the summit of Mount Rosa. We'll see ...
